As the 14th Five-Year-Year Plan (2021-25) concludes, Shexian county, the cradle of Huizhou culture in Huangshan, showcases a remarkable transformation, blending ancient heritage with modern industry and innovation.

The county is emerging as an advanced manufacturing hub. Its economic development zone, with revenue exceeding 55 billion yuan ($7.89 billion), is now a national green industrial park. Companies like Huangshan Zhangshi Crankshaft are expanding with smart, automated production lines. A breakthrough in heavy-duty electric drone manufacturing marks the birth of a new industrial chain. Over 90 new high-tech enterprises have been added, with R&D investment leading the city for three consecutive years.

The ancient county is also breathing new life into its cultural legacy. It was ranked among China's top 100 counties for tourism. The iconic Huizhou fish lanterns have evolved from traditional folk art into a cultural phenomenon, featured in immersive nighttime shows and creative products. One fish lantern IP was ranked among the national top 10 for intangible heritage. Over 260 cultural tourism events were held, attracting more than 4 million visitors.

Shexian is a key guardian of the Xin'an River, a pilot region for cross-provincial ecological compensation. It has invested heavily in systematic protection, with water quality at key sections consistently exceeding standards for 14 years. The county is also pioneering in realizing ecological value, completing the province's first forestry carbon sink trade.

With new schools, hospitals, and a comprehensive transportation network, Shexian is building a high-quality, modern city while preserving the soul of an ancient capital, charting a dynamic path for sustainable development.
